The Black Girl High Tea will take place October 26th in Baltimore’s Light St. pavilion pop-up exhibition space and café. The Baltimore Times Light St. exhibition is a space featuring over 200 Black Baltimore creatives, which is one of the largest gatherings of black artists in a public open space in Baltimore City. The Black Girl High Tea is a time for Black and brown women and young girls to gather, celebrate and network with one another while we honor a few trailblazers among the women and girls that have made amazing contributions to community. This is also a way in which the audience can witness the newest iteration of Dear Black Girl – Letters to My Sisters which is an installation space created by Baltimore multidisciplinary artist Tamara Payne. My work explores the constructions of marginalized people through multimedia, fashion, public installations, film, assemblage, portraiture and performance art. The women will be able to tour the newest iteration of the Dear Black Girl installation and see the entire Creatively Black Baltimore exhibition while we savor traditional selections of sweet and savory foods served on multiple tiers in the café area adorned with African textiles. The reception will be two and a half hours of poetry, music and celebration. The women and girls will be asked to adorn themselves in African textiles and (optional) high tea hats.
