BFMS Contra Dance
Saturday, October 12, 2024
7:30 pm lesson, 8-10:30pm dance
The program is doing contra dancing to a live band and with instructions by a caller. The dancing can also include square and circle dancing. There is usually a set of  8 dances, a waltz, a break and then another 6 dances, concluding with a final waltz. During the break snacks are provided. All activities are open to the public and are enjoyed by people of all ages. Children as young as a few years old and people in their 90’s dance with us. The caller provides a focused dance instructions session before the dance starts. During the evening each dance is taught, using the technique of providing instructions as a walk-through of the dance is done. There is no need to come with a partner since people will mix around and dance with a variety of people throughout the evening. We encourage new dancers to dance with experienced dancers. The calling uses genderless terms. The live music brings a wonderful opportunity to watch music being made and to move with the music. People who want to sit and enjoy the music can do so from one of the many chairs set up along the sides of the hall. People are encouraged to wear soft soled shoes and comfortable clothing, and bring along a water bottle, that can be refilled if needed. There are online examples of contra dancing people can view to get an idea of the fun they will experience at the program and learn some basic steps before attending.
