SUMMARY:CityLit Studio XI: Championing Banned Books
DESCRIPTION:October 4-10\, 2026\, is Banned Books Week\, a campaign begun b
y the American Library Association to protect the freedom to read. On Satu
rday\, October 10\, 2026\, CityLit Project partners with Motor House to en
gage readers\, writers\, and book club members in reading and sharing bann
ed books. This event acknowledges the gravity of banned books while ultima
tely serving as a celebration of literature. Consider this an invitation t
o join us in a lively exchange about books that are being forced off libra
ry and school shelves. Attendees should come prepared to read a favorite p
assage from a banned book and discuss its importance. This event is free.
Registration is requested\, but not required.\n\nTo submit your RSVP and l
earn more\, please click HERE.\n\nThe books on the banned list often inclu
de authors or characters of color\, LGBTQIA+ authors or characters\, and t
hemes of anti-racism\, social justice\, equity\, or the freedom to be ones
elf. According to PEN America\, nearly 60% of books on the banned list are
written for youth\; undervalued young folks are often in desperate need t
o see themselves represented. Banning books\, where they might find resona
nce\, does great harm.\n\nTo elevate awareness for the freedom to read and
write stories\, we encourage book swaps\, reading out loud\, and a cultur
al exchange of ideas. Let's teach each other how to support books and auth
ors in this age where the freedom of expression is under threat.\n\nAll ar
e welcome. Come alone or bring a friend. A host will moderate the two-hour
festive event: an afternoon delight of books\, conversation\, and the fre
edom to read. Motor House spirits are available for purchase.
